Water management isn’t a nice to have, it’s a strategic priority. From cooling machinery to washing and cleaning, proper water management is fundamental to ensure operational efficiency and product quality. We’ve set ambitious targets – to reduce water withdrawals by 42% per ton of glass produced by 2030 (vs 2020 baseline).
Here’s what we’re doing to preserve it:
♻️ Water efficiency systems – in 2025 four of SGD Pharma’s five plants operate closed-loop water systems that reduce water withdrawals and wastewater volumes by reusing water multiple times.
🌧️ Rainwater harvesting – since 2019, our Vemula plant has operated a rainwater harvesting system supported by a 15,000 m3 rainwater recovery tank, reducing reliance on local water sources and the municipal network.
🔁 Cooling systems – Adiabatic cooling systems offer the greatest water savings, using water during high temperature periods only. The adiabatic tower installed in 2024 at Sucy-en-Brie delivered a full year of water savings in 2025. In 2025, our Vemula plant replaced an open tower with an adiabatic system for electrode cooling, reducing water use by approximately 14 m3 per day.
💧 Monitoring and data systems – in 2024, Zhanjiang introduced a remote water-metering system to enable real-time tracking and early alerts. Combined with other technical initiatives, this helped reduce site water consumption by 45% between 2019 and 2025.
But it doesn’t stop there, we continue to raise awareness and initiate dedicated training for site managers to strengthen preparedness for water-related incidents such as localized shortages, system overflows or flooding, and potential pollution risks.
